MIX, MATCH AND FUSE (II)

We hope that you already know the pre-requisites of fusing different interior design styles, and if you don’t, please go through the part one of this article, so that the things discussed here, don’t seem too different.

Let us begin with the first tip mentioned in our part one, which related to the 80-20 rule. This rule can be applied in various aspects of your life, but we will only stick with its application in the interior design related space. Please keep in mind that the more similar the styles that you are planning to mix are, the easier will it be for you to get a satisfying output. However, the 80-20 rule makes it a bit easier to mix almost any two different types of interior design styles. So, if you are a beginner, we would suggest that you stick with two interior design styles and then progress gradually with introducing the other styles once you get a satisfying output.

Getting to the rule, 80-20 suggests that you need to identify your primary style, that will make up the 80% of your space while your secondary style will complete the remaining 20% to elevate your space and make it more personalised for your liking. To give you an example, if you are planning to mix styles like Zen and Indian, you will first have to identify your preferred style that will form the 80% of your space (don’t worry, the metric is not absolute, and is only a guidance for your understanding). Considering that Zen is a more calm and serene style that has soft shapes and elements in the surrounding, while the Indian style is more colourful that has a rather enthusiastic environment when compared to that of Zen, it will be difficult to find a 50-50 sweet spot to fuse the two styles. However, if one of the styles is taken to be the primary style and you can easily decorate your surroundings to get a cohesive environment. And once you are happy with the results, you can introduce elements of the other style to have a fusion that expresses your desired style.

If you reach a point where you are happy with the fusion and want to introduce a third style, go ahead and introduce more elements to incorporate your third style. But please ensure that you don’t create a confusing surrounding with three very different types of interior design styles. To make your journey more convenient, you can use our, ‘Find your style’ tool to understand your style preferences. Not only that, it will also give your recommendations for your secondary and tertiary styles, that you will easily be able to utilise in order to create a more cohesive personal space.
