DESIGN, DECORATION AND PERSONALITY (I)

Have you ever wondered if your personality has an influence over the type of interior design that you might prefer?

Well, you don’t have to wonder anymore because we tried to find the answer for you (by going through some boring and some interesting studies conducted about this)!

Before diving into the topic, let us understand the concept of personality. Study of personality is a complex topic in the field of psychology (like its other topics), so there has been a range of perspectives and models developed by famous psychologists to understand it. For instance, the big 5 personality traits, Myers-Briggs type indicator and the enneagram of personality help to define personalities of individuals based on their characteristics and qualities. Therefore, there is no easy way to explain the personality of an individual but with enough data, some claims can be made about certain groups of individuals.

Keeping this in mind, studies by Osborn (1988) and Kim et al. (2009) suggest that personality types do have a significant impact on the way people decorate and design their spaces, even if it is subconscious.

This brings us to another question -

Do people feel uncomfortable when they live in a mismatched setting?

The answer to this question is – Most Probably!

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any conclusive research regarding this, because, obviously, perceptions of design and personality are both subjective and nothing can be said in concrete terms. However, it can be said with adequate confidence that personalities do influence the way individuals perceive the surrounds around them.

Don’t worry, we can design a short experiment ourselves to test this phenomenon!

Are you sitting in a space that was designed and decorated by you (or with an input from you)? Do you feel comfortable while using this space? Do you have an urge to adjust or change the setting in your space to meet your newer needs? Does the space allow you to relax and have a comfortable lifestyle? Do you feel uncomfortable when your space is designed or decorated in a different way?

If you answered yes, to all the questions, we can hopefully say that personalities do influence the way we perceive design and decoration of a space. So, in the period of fast-fashion and daily trends, it is important that we acknowledge the importance of what suits our personality.
